MY NAME'S WILLIAM MARLER...

I'm an award-winning animator, keen runner, and Cystic Fibrosis patient living in Birmingham, England. I'm very lucky for my CF to not stop me doing what I want, such as: running the London Marathon, making Pep Mask – a Cystic Fibrosis film that's been screened worldwide, and speaking to a number of audiences about my life and work.

My favourite podcasts are MountainShort CutsSmall Town Dicks, and 99% Invisible. You can keep up to date with me and my Cystic Fibrosis by following my blog.

It's been an exciting process seeing the podcast come together from idea to creation, so I was thrilled to help Will with this project by designing the illustrations for each of the episodes.

My illustration style is very simple and graphic and I am inspired by graphic artists such as Saul Steinberg and Marjane Satrapi. I like working digitally but I also love sketching and paper cutting and I have my own Etsy shop where I sell my creations. I enjoy illustrating at live events such as TEDxBrum taking important topics and visualising them. I am also currently working with Will as a storyboard artist and illustrator on a variety of motion graphics projects.

I met William at a London design show in 2016 where I screened A Small Story, and bonded immediately with him over our shared interest in art ‘for a cause’.

I love taking real life stories, little glimpses of humanity, and creating visuals that bring the voices to life. I work mainly with hand-drawn animation, and generally-speaking my work is quite light and delicate, using traditional materials such as coloured pencil, watercolour and charcoal.

Since my first ever encounter with animation as a medium, I have seen its great potential in sharing information, and its capability to raise awareness and make change. I enjoy animating the most when I am harnessing this potential and exploring little tales from people's everyday lives.

My work tends to end up being a mish-mash of different animation techniques and mediums including collage, hand drawn, cut out, stop motion and replacement animation. Whatever I think will make the viewer really understand the story, I will use!
